This soldier of whom I speak is my father, Emerson Franklin Hunsberger. He led an early life of independence and helpfulness, especially where the farm and his mother were concerned. He started working at age 12, earning his own spending money.

Independence, efficiency and helpfulness--these would be the keys to his early successes in life. He was a tower of strength to his family, entirely beloved, an outstanding church member, a successful highway engineer who made lasting contributions through innovative ideas to the highways of Arlington and the byways of Virginia.

Perhaps most important, these attributes caught the eye of the U.S. military, as he became a leader in the Army Signal Corps, working as a communications engineer during World War II.

In peacetime, it was Hunsberger's Army experience that qualified him to become a Virginia highway engineer and surveyor.

And finally, a note to Emerson Franklin Hunsberger (March 17, 1914 - May 4, 2016):

Thanks, Dad, for your sacrifice, and the risks you took every day, to make this world a safer place. And through communications, did your part to hasten the wartime Allies to a swift and sure victory.
